Perspective Pieces

Reminder: The Informed SLP doesn't review Perspective Pieces (tutorials or opinion pieces from experts on a topic). We only cover empirical research.  However, they are often a *great* read, so we do still want to show them to you each month! Enjoy~

"SLPs shouldn't be expected to dig through the research alone. It's simply inefficient."

– Meredith P. Harold, PhD, CCC-SLP

Some SLPs will read this quote and think 👆 "Ah, yes. Makes sense. Good to know."⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
Other SLPs will read it and think, "Well no freaking DUH!" (especially Spanish-speaking SLPs 🤣)⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
But the beauty of this study extends beyond the obvious (promise). They provide us with a list of the most unknown/uncommon Spanish CDI words (nice!), and also explain how to use total vocabulary score (i.e., Spanish IDHC + English CDI) to provide more accurate data and minimize issues with a word list that doesn't translate well across cultures (whew!)⁣⁣⁣

It can be hard to figure out your role in reading instruction, especially if you work in a school. On the one hand, reading is a huge part of the curriculum and is so important for helping students succeed; on the other, there are already so many professionals targeting reading that it can be hard not to step on anyone’s toes. ⁣⠀
⁣⠀
Lervåg et al. studied the development of reading comprehension (AKA the ultimate goal of all of this reading instruction) over time, and their results show why oral language is an important part of children’s reading outcomes. ⁣⠀

When we have a link to share (to a website, journal article, whatever) where do you want us to put it?⁣
⁣
1) As a #linkinprofile type thing, where you click to a website that shows all our links, per page post.⁣
⁣
2) As a shortened link in the page post. Like bit.ly/blahblahblah. Which you can't click, but you could go type in. ⁣
⁣
3) In stories. Where you can swipe up, rather than having to type something into a web browser or navigate the #linkinprofile stuff.⁣
⁣
4) Something else??⁣
⁣
Also, if you feel like there's an Instagram account that does links REALLY WELL, could you tag them below? I'm trying to figure out what's easiest on you all!⁣

Thanks #ebpslps 😘⁣
This review we wrote back in 2017 on language in juvenile offenders is one of my all-time favorites, illuminating connections I'd never even considered before.⁣
⁣
Did you know that around HALF (or more) of juvenile offenders have a language disorder, even when you control for nonverbal IQ, SES, and amount of time spent in school? ⁣
⁣
Half. Maybe even MOST.⁣
⁣
Now, here’s the mind-blowing part: When the authors of this study looked at the case histories of the juvenile offenders, none of them had EVER had speech-language therapy. NONE OF THEM.⁣
⁣
There are a lot of unanswered questions when it comes to these kids' paths. The authors, however, predict that it’s possible that their language needs had been “hidden behind the emotional behavioral difficulties that were more overtly displayed”.⁣
⁣
To learn more about children, teens, and adults with language disorder, follow the hashtag #devlangdis here and on other social media platforms.⁣
⁣
And to learn more about the details of this study and what they found, read our review, "Language in juvenile offenders: The importance of sampling expository discourse"⁣
⁣
On this research: Hopkins, T., Clegg, J. & Stackhouse, J. (2017) Examining the Association between Language, Expository Discourse, and Offending Behaviour: An Investigation of Direction, Strength, and Independence. International Journal of Language & Communication Disorders.⁣

Kids from Hispanic families may be BOTH under- and over-identified in special education.⁣
⁣
Not having or using the right assessment practices is part of the reason why.⁣
